Guest Post: Illegal Aliens – So Where’s the FENCE?

Congress last year passed a bill authorizing the construction of 700 miles of a fence to help secure our southern border. So far a grand total of 14 miles of it have been built, despite the fact that a similar fence along the border between San Diego and Mexico reduced illegal smuggling of people and drugs by 90 percent and reduced the city’s crime rate by 50 percent. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff dismissively says that a border fence has some “symbolic value.” Perhaps Mr. Chertoff can explain why, if fences have only symbolic value, we have one around the White House and every military installation in the country.

The government’s failure to control illegal immigration is going to be a tough pill for the parents of 12-year-old Zina Linnik to swallow. The girl was kidnapped (during a July 4 fireworks show), raped and killed in a “senseless and horrific crime,” apparently by a 42-year-old convicted sex offender who is also an illegal alien. Despite being convicted of incest in 1990 and a registered sex offender since at least 2002 (he was diagnosed with pedophilia through a court-ordered psychological evaluation) and in the country illegally, no effort evidently was ever made to deport him. (Fox News delicately says only that “he is being held on charges relative to his immigration status.” He apparently has been in the U.S. illegally since 1977, and even enlisted in the Army. The parable of the two wolves: One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, “My son, the battle is between two “wolves” inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith (“faith in me and you”). The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
