Andi Elliott: Jefferson Star is a REAL “Star”!

January 8th, 2014 by Halli

By Andi Elliott

Looking at the Post Register’s January 1st “year in review” summary, I see that Jefferson County outdid itself by claiming two of the top ten spots for the most “Jeered”. While most of the “honorees” also appeared in the most “Cheered”, unfortunately Jefferson County didn’t make the cut in that respect.

Our little county paper also outdid itself for had it not been for the Star and their persistent reporter, Charlie VanLeuven, county residents would have continued to remain in the dark about the misuse of power by our sheriff, prosecutor, and commissioners. I remember coming out of an Executive Session with the Commissioners on July 8th of this past year. Charlie was waiting in the hallway. It was Charlie that made me realize that I had been hoodwinked by the Commissioners and Prosecutor Dunn having been told that it was against the law to discuss Executive Session matters publically. But having the foresight to realize that they would probably try to “gag” me in some way, I had sent my presentation to the media beforehand which nevertheless did not lessen the illegal threat made to me by Commissioner Raymond in the presence of our County Attorney Dunn.

The actions of our county leaders have brought about many legal repercussions for county taxpayers. Before Christmas I filed a Tort Claim against the county delineating 20 issues with 71 pages of documentation and another 4 gigabytes of supporting materials. I have learned that my claim is the 6th recently pending action against the county. You might recall that the Post Register recently filed suit against them for breaking state open meeting laws. There is legal action pending by Sheriff Olsen’s former bookkeeper and also by his former Chief Deputy among others. County tax payers pay an attorney to keep us out of “hot water” so why are we embroiled in so many court actions? Could be that our County Attorney seems to be a common factor in multiple litigations? Just last week, the Idaho Attorney General’s office told me that the investigation of our sheriff is ongoing. I’m sure that many of us wonder what the New Year will bring. May I suggest if you have not renewed your subscription to the Star that it’s a good time to do so?
